Everyone remembers Tonya Harding. She's the figure skater whose husband tried to whack the competition, Nancy Kerrigan, before the 1994 Olympics in Norway. It's one of the most famous sports scandals in US history. Before that scandal Tonya had been an excellent figure skater. She placed sixth at the 1986 US Figure Skating Championships and in 1991 won the event. At the time she was the first US woman to complete a triple axel in competition and that sealed the event for her.
In the 1992 Olympics she placed fourth, leaving her just short of the medal stand and no doubt feeding her desire to win in 1994. That's what led her husband to take a crack at Nancy Kerrigan's knee and set the sporting world on fire. It was incredibly stupid and bold and in the long run ineffective since Kerrigan skated at the Olympics and beat Harding. As punishment for her involvement she received three years probation, 500 hours of community service and a $160,000 fine.
Shortly after the whole incident her husband released a sex tape of the two of them screwing. She has since divorced from her husband. She achieved a small amount of fame as a celebrity boxer and as a genuine female boxer. She was 3-3 in her career so it wasn't much of a success. Anyone alive and well during the whole scandal will never forget the name Tonya Harding. It was simply too big a deal to ever leave the mind.
